The Majestic Hotel

Completed in 1913, the Majestic Hotel, then the only palace hotel in the capital, was a grand hotel in Tunis owned by René Kisraoui.

Requisitioned from November 1942 to May 1943 by the German army, it thus became the headquarters of the ‘Kommandantur’ and then the headquarters of the American army after the liberation.

After Tunisia’s Independence, the hotel became a landmark establishment that hosted numerous official guests. Until the early 1960s, President Habib Bourguiba welcomed foreign heads of state and official guests of the Tunisian Republic at the Majestic. Renowned French and international artists who traveled to Tunisia to perform concerts and recitals also stayed at the Majestic Hotel. Among them were Georges Brassens, Barbara, Charles Aznavour, The Platters, Luis Mariano, and Gilbert Bécaud.

The year 1972 marked a new turning point in the hotel’s history. The hotel entered a new chapter with the arrival of a new owner.

Fully renovated, the Majestic Hotel, a 4-star establishment, regained its former prestige while remaining faithful to its spirit and history. The renovation preserved the authenticity of its Art Nouveau style while introducing a distinctly contemporary touch and modern comfort. Part of the hotel’s furniture, woodwork, and lighting fixtures date back to the original period, giving the property a unique and timeless charm.

To revive the memory of these past moments, the Majestic organized a competition in spring 2011 to collect the most beautiful “memory stories” connected to the hotel.
